It has been awhile since I have posted. Here is a new oil done in the parking lot of Bufflehead's restaurant at Hills Beach in Biddeford. The distant view is looking across to Biddeford Pool another of my new favorite summer painting locations.
For those who may be interested I have been setting up painting sessions with several students in these areas and also Cape Porpoise. I also have a weekly class at River Tree Arts on Wed. from 9am-12 noon. The weather has been great to get out to paint!

Here is the painting after I stopped working at 4:20pm this afternoon. I had fun with that foreground color. It is very impressionistic in treatment. There is such subtle color right now.
It was sunny and bright but a little bite in the wind still. Spring is coming though and I had longer to work on this one then i would have last month at this time.
The painting is 16 x 20" in oils and the whole thing was completed on location .

The Harbor Room in Gloucester,MA

This painting was sold this weekend. It is the Harbor Room in East Gloucester, MA.
It is an acrylic on panel 6 x 8". It was also featured on "Good Morning Gloucester " this morning. Thanks Paul! Always happy to paint Gloucester my old hometown. This was a view my friends and I stumbled on while looking for a location one cold day in early February.
I had added that image earlier in a blog. That painting did not work out and was destroyed. This one is much better and I may make a larger version of it.

Her is my block in for a painting done on Sunday morning as part of my three day workshop this weekend. We had sunny but windy conditions for most of the time but we all had fun.
This painting was done at the corner of Card Mill Road and Lebanon Road in North Berwick.

Here is the painting as it stands from the session. I will work it up a bit more in the studio.
I like the afternoon warm glow against the shadows and cooler tones in the foreground. It has a subtle color range.

Another wind chill day on Sunday but temps were a bit warmer around 35 so it was only a wind chill of 24 or so. Gusts at times were pretty rugged. We chose to stay near a tree line to help block the wind. It worked for most of the time. Again Richard was out on location with me.

Back in the Studio

I made some changes back in the studio. I decided even though the branch was broken on the tree in the foreground it was an awkward way to paint it. I decided to give it back some life and added another branch or two. I cleaned up the edges and design of snow in the middle ground and refined the trees more.
I worked for about an hour and a half in the studio.

This is the final version of the painting worked up a little more in the studio without the wind chill! I refined the trees and decided to lower the value in the foreground area. I worked a bit more on the design in the shadows and some edges needed to be softer on the driveway.

This is the only brave (or crazy) student to paint with me yesterday: Richard Schmid .
I liked his comp better than mine actually because of his slower lead in with the driveway curve. Different concept and better result I think.
A tip of the hat to a new member of the hardcore winter painters group.Good job Richard- the other Richard Schmid would be proud of you.
I am from Cape Ann and have always been crazy to be out in the cold.We are just brought up that way down there... Always trying to bring in new members to the club ,ha,ha!
Outdoor sessions continue every Sunday afternoon from 1-4pm. For the indoor people who want to stay warm- Saturdays from 10:30-1:3opm in my studio and I have a wood pellet stove.
Three day winter workshop coming up Feb. 19-21 (no indoor class that weekend -sorry unless it rains or snows of course)

Here is the stage pretty close to the end. the setting sun would make the foreground shadows creep across and force the light back up on the house.

Early stages

This is early on in the painting but I wish I had moved the house up and had a slower line leading in. Now it has to become a tree study. A little uncertain of the concept was the problem here looking back on it. I almost painted more sky so I could feature the trees height. That may also have been interesting.

Not really sure that comp on this one works that well, but it is a nice color study anyway. It was a nice mood in the late afternoon. Of course I would like to have seen more snow...

Mid way stages

Here I have worked up the storage shed on the right and the curved roof and sharpened the tree shadows across the roof. Soon the cloud cover would move in so I was happy to get the shadows in before that.

The Block In

My canvas was 14 x 18" and I began to block in with simple warm and cool colors of the right values. I liked the shapes of the roof lines and the warm distant hills of Gloucester.

This is the final working of "Winter Afternoon at Segal Farm". I added the cattle and just refined some of the edges of the trees and shadows. This 25 x 31" oil will be on exhibit at the Walsingham Gallery in Newburyport by the weekend.

Here is a photo of my scene. I was really hoping for a bit of sun but with the rains moving in, it was not to be. The overcast skies made the snow appear lighter than the skies, and it reminded me of one of my current favorite artists- Edward Redfield. A gray day in winter is a beautiful thing to paint.

The Olde Woolen Mill

This painting was started on Sunday afternoon. I wanted to get those ice flows before they all washed away in the rains. This is 20 x 16" in oil on canvas. Next I will post the photo of the scene and later the painting after just a few minor adjustments in the studio on Monday.
I have been enjoying working larger on site this winter.
This old mill is in North Berwick just down the street from my house. I painted it right on the bridge looking down into the river.

Old Barn in South Berwick

And here we have the painting at the end of the three hours on location. There may be a few refinements added in the studio, but for the most part it is finished on location.

I will be teaching a winter workshop outdoors for those who may be interested. Most of what I paint is in a nearby area of less than 15 miles...

Lodging is available near my home and studio. Indoor sessions will be at my studio if it is way too cold or in snow or rain but I am hoping to have the classes outdoors to share my on site teaching methods. Of course proper winter clothing will be needed. I can list that for you if you need it and post photos and links for the best outlets. Carhart makes a good winter suit but there are plenty of other suits that work fine too. Mine is called "Blizzard Pruf" by Walls. I wouldn't go out without it!

Second stage of the painting

This is about an hour or so into it. I was working up the values in the shadows of the snow and the colors of the barnboards. The trees are still a simple silhouette and mass against the sky. As it got closer to noon it was getting warmer near 22-24 degrees. Started feeling pretty warm to me. It was about 15 when I started at 9am.

A Sunny Winter Morning

This is an acrylic painting 5 x 7" of Essex, MA near Gloucester where I grew up.
This is not today's weather that's for sure. It is a soggy rainy day here today in North Berwick and it is washing away most of the snow. I don't like that. Might be a snow storm next weekend though so that will fix things. As most of you know I love to paint snow! Like most Cape Ann artists, it is my favorite season!

I used to list some of these smaller works on Ebay from time to time. I won't be doing that anymore. There is such a large amount of really bad art on there and it is very difficult to find work there. Many of my collectors have told me this. Sunny morning in December

Here is the painting as it looks now back in the studio. I haven't really done much to it except to refine some of the shadows and redesign the sky back to where it was in the early stages. I had been tempted to change the sky on location, but it would have meant a different mood for the painting and it would have been "chasing the light". Not a good idea.

Clouds move in

In this photo the clouds have really moved in and changed everything about the scene.
In the early stages it had been sunny and the snow covered roofs had been a darker value than the sky. Now it was the opposite and it was time to pack it up. I didn't want to repaint the whole scene with that mood. It would have changed my whole original concept.

This is about half way through the session and the cloud cover was beginning to move in now.

I started to indicate that in the sky and found myself caught up in that mood.

Well here is a painting I did on Sunday morning. The sun was out to start the painting, and I focused on the shadows as you can see along with the frozen small pond in the foreground. This was a warm grey tone which was in harmony with the reflected light on the houses and barns.
This oil is 30 x 30" square .

First Snow at Doughty Falls

The painting is the largest I have done on that location, 26 x 32", and I have always wanted to work larger there. It was exciting to be out on the first day of snow this season. I had really been looking forward to it. It was a pretty warm morning too and I was a bit overdressed with my coveralls suit , hat and boots that are good to 30 below.
I had to remind myself to take the photos as I worked so I could show the stages. First time I have thought of doing this.
Just a few minor adjustments and it will be off to the gallery.

Well here it is set up on the easel before I packed up and headed home. It was about noon when I finished working. The painting is 26 x 32" in oils on canvas.
It will be on exhibit at the Wright Gallery in Cape Porpoise, Maine later this week.

This is the first block in of shapes on my painting yesterday morning at the Doughty Falls in North Berwick. It was a bright sunny day after the snow storm of the day before. I have always wanted to do a large canvas at the Falls.

This 8 x 8" acrylic on panel along with many of my daily paintings from the last couple of years , will be on display at my home and gallery at 33 Wells Street in North Berwick, Maine.
A reception with refreshments will be today- Saturday Nov. 14- from 2-6pm. There are more than 150 small works on exhibit along with my larger paintings. I will have ths show up through Dec. 31, 2009.
After today however it will be by appointment only so call or email ahead .
Just a few words on the whole daily painter internet world. There have been individuals who have attempted to gather up groups of daily painters for a blog or online gallery. Some of these people have been out to just make money for themselves so I would warn all daily painters to keep in mind you can promote your own work if you take the time and effort. Beware of some of these. They all start out the same a free space to exhibit and post you daily painting that leads to "oh now we will be charging $14.00 a month" to be on this site. I have left two of them so far for this reason.

Autumn Colors -Shaw's Barn

This painting was done on location on the Valley Road here in North Berwick, Maine.
It is an oil on canvas panel, 11 x 14". The owner of the barn, Mr. Shaw, gave me permission to park in his lumber mill. This was much appreciated as my car was parked on the side of a busy country road.
Oakwoods Road has always been one of my favorite painting areas especially in the fall. This barn is at the corner of Oakwoods and Valley roads.

This painting is 12 x 8" in acrylic on panel. The Westward is from Rockland, ME and this is the second time I have painted it in Gloucester, MA. The last time it was on the railways at Rocky Neck.

This painting is a 16 x 20" acrylic on canvas. It has won the Carleen Muniz Memorial award at the 4th summer juried show at the Rockport Art Association (MA).
This award is special to me because Carleen and I had painted together over the years and were friends. She passed away in June of this year.

This painting was done from an oil study painted in a beautiful setting in a backyard in Newcastle, NH. The owners of the home had bought one of my paintings and we also had a few classes that summer. This is an acrylic on panel with glazes and washes for a soft egg tempera feeling , but without the eggs!
